One ring to rule them all

For the last three weeks Amelia has been scratching.  It started with a barely audible scritch, scritch, scritch, against the fabric of her basinet.  I figured I needed to file her nails, so the next night I did that while she lay on her changing table, occupied with the black and white shapes we’d taped to the wall next to her.  I flipped her over to have some tummy time and put her little yellow chicky in front of her.  Pretty soon I heard scritch, scritch, scritch on the fabric of the changing table mat.  Over the next several days she scratched at everything she came in contact with, the fabric spider with the crinkly insides, and especially her bassinet when she’s bored.  These days she’ll only do it multiple times if it makes a loud enough noise.  The sides of her bouncer with the foam insert is her favorite, it makes a nice loud scritching noise.

Last night I was giving Amelia her bath, a nightly routine.  Usually I sing whatever random children’s song comes into my head as I wash all of her body parts and then give her a washcloth to suck on and some playtime with the water.  I’d sung Old McDonald to her on several previous occasions without her paying much attention, but last night when I launched into the first animal noise (pig) she looked up at me and laughed her head off.  Shocked, I stopped singing and she gave me a look like she realized that maybe she wasn’t supposed to laugh.  So I started singing again and every time I came to an animal noise she laughed hysterically.  It was so cool!  It got to the point that I was laughing with her so hard I couldn’t sing anymore.  After awhile I ran out of animals and mice and cockroach noises didn’t do it for her so the fun ended and she went back to sucking on her washcloth, pretty much like nothing had happened.
